After being tricked by a mysterious voice in a cursed sword into picking it up, the homeless street urchin Merkittan accidentally slays the former blade's wielder, freeing the voice from the blade. The voice is revealed to be the self-proclaimed "Master Thespian, King of Capers", with a fool's vanity and a craftman's magic beneath every hidden pocket and a sharper tongue to match, he reveals to Kit that by picking up that cursed blade, Merkittan is blighted with Ostorian Rot, leaving the boy only ten more years left to live.
Synopsis below; What Remains of Them is a long-winding Roman Empire-era inspired fantasy epic set in a world of flying legions, power vacuums, and the titular "them".

I like to write science fiction, but I'm always slow at finishing something; closure is complicated, who woulda guessed. When I'm not doing that, however, I write one-off Medium posts about whatever interests me.
A mysterious freak accident of a continental piece of the Alledian High World falling upon the Therran Low World causes the ceasing of most Therran-based royal bloodlines, leaving the third-born young scion, Aemillion the Unlikely, with no family but his distant cousin, to run the city-state of Hallidan by himself. As the remainder of the ground-bound Therrans begin another righteous but ultimately useless revolt against their superior Alledian overlords in the sky and Aemillion is torn to join the cause, he is granted a foreboding power that will bring him on another path.
Lucius, an Alledian slave turned soldier with only a jade lunula given from his old family, given traditionally to young girls, becomes a soldier for the Legio IX Astrum for a full Alledian citizenship, the last remaining legion under House Seinum's control after His Highest High, Princepater Vessius Alledius Maelius, seized most of the Nine Legions for an unknown biological weapon connected to why the plate of the Alledian High World broke off. Distrust between the Patrician Houses and the Royal Family while a revolt brews underneath them reveal the first cracks the thousand-year empire, all the while Lucius tries to find the family that abandoned him.
Interstellar mortuary driver Steven Bailey was making his way from the Pleiades when the coffin containing supposedly dead CPO Astra Voynich began shifting in the trunk. Loss, hilarities, and everything in between ensue as Steven and the annoyed and now-alive Astra scramble to get back to Earth as everything falls apart around them.
